History and Purpose

The Northeast Arkansas Flyfishers club (NEAFF) was started in August of 1989. Dennis Reed and Hubie Brodell, Jr. saw a need for a club in Northeast Arkansas that would try to meet the needs of fly fishers. The first meeting was held at the Fishing Store and Brodell served as the first president.

The purposes of the NEAFF as stated in the clubs bylaws are:
  • To maintain and further fly fishing as a sport.
  • To preserve and conserve our game fishing habitat.
  • To facilitate and improve the knowledge of fly fishing
  • To provide a voice for fly fishers everywhere.
  • To provide an educational forum for the benefit of waterways and fisheries, and
  • To engage in such activities as may be necessary and expedient for the achievement of the above stated purposes.
Or to summarize, it is our goal to promote the sport of fly fishing through fishing, conservation, and education.

The NEAFF is an active member in the Southern Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF). We also work with a variety of groups including other fly fishing clubs and conservation groups on matters of importance to our club, especially those matters pertaining to conservation of natural resources. In 2001, the Southern Council recognized our club as the Outstanding Club of the Year.

Each year the NEAFF holds a fly casing clinic. This has always been FREE to our members and their families. We also offer fly tying classes suitable for the beginner who is just starting to tie all the way up to the expert who is continually seeking to improve their techniques.

The club hosts a variety of outings including club fishing trips, float trips, and cookouts. Each December we hold our annual Christmas dinner and fundraiser. This is always our most attended event offering our members an opportunity to bid on a wide array of articles in both a live and a silent auction.

Members of the NEAFF conduct several seminars pertaining to the sport of fly-fishing. These seminars usually include demonstrations, instruction, and hands on participation in the areas of fly-casting and fly tying. Groups who have participated in the past include Nettleton Jr. High School, Boys Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the Women in the Outdoors program.

The NEAFF publishes a monthly newsletter titled "Tight Lines." Club members publish the newsletter and all members are encouraged to contribute news, articles, tips, and etc. to the newsletter. "Tight Lines" is partially supported by our advertisers, whom we greatly appreciated.

The club currently meets the second Tuesday night of each month at Crowley's Ridge Nature Center. The nature center is located at 600 E. Lawson Road. The meetings start at 6:30pm with one of members or even a guest speaker tying a fly or flies for the group. A short business session is then followed with a program, which may consist of a guest speaker or a member discussing a topic that is of interest to the club.
